PostHeaderIcon Thank You To Don & Renee Spielberger

From the National Director

All Members of the SSMA

You may remember that last year I attended the Toledo Weak Signals RC Expo, in Toledo, OH to promote our hobby and with the hope of gaining some new members.  The SSMA was able to share a booth with Loyalhanna Dockyard complementary of Don & Renee Spielberger.

Thanks to the effort of Don & Renee Spielberger of Loyalhanna Dockyard and working with the promoters of the 58th Annual Weak Signals RC Expo, he was able to obtain a separate booth for the SSMA at no cost to the club.

The show runs from Friday April 13th through Sunday April 15th, 2012 at the SeaGate Centre on Jefferson Avenue in Toledo, OH.

We will again be promoting our hobby and again hope to gain new members. Several members have stepped forward and are willing to help man the booth.

Sadly the SSMA CAN NOT reimburse you for your expense; however you would get free admittance into the show.

If you are interested in helping man the booth for about 4 hours Friday, Saturday or Sunday please let me know via e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by phone at 219-661-0163.  Please let me know A.S.A.P.

At present we have had two members come forward to help.

Thank you

Ken Griffin

National & Membership Director

The Towline

by Bob Gesking

reprinted from Fall 2003 Journal

...

Does one of your models have a towline for rescuing disabled model boats?  If you have a model tugboat, you should have a rescue towline for it.  I have several tugs, and almost everyone has its own towline.  Did you know that one of the SSMA events is the “Salvage” event, where you get to “rescue” a disabled or derelict boat?  How are you going to practice if you don’t have a towline?  The “salvage” event rules state that: “A tug, or other vessel suitably fitted, approaches a “derelict”, snags it, and tows it back to port.  The derelict may be snagged by a line towed astern of the (rescue) vessel while it circles the derelict.  The drag (tow) line will carry a small float at two thirds and at the end of its length.  Regatta organizers will supply lines of 10, 15, and 20 feet in length for the contestants to choose from.”

Wave Blasters of Florida

The 47MLB was developed in the 1990's to be used in extreme bad weather and heavy swells.  It was designed to automatically right itself if overturned.  The original 47's including the 47201 was one of the prototype models for the Coast Guard. After several upgrades the 47 MLB was mass produced and still in service throughout the US and other countries. The crew is normally made up of six coasties with two in the lower conn and two boarding members. The original 47201 was auctioned off since the upgrades were too costly to justify.  Where is she now, I do not know.
