The Towline by Bob Gesking reprinted from Fall 2003 Journal

Does one of your models have a towline for rescuing disabled model boats? If you have a model tugboat, you should have a rescue towline for it. I have several tugs, and almost everyone has its own towline. Did you know that one of the SSMA events is the “Salvage” event, where you get to “rescue” a disabled or derelict boat? How are you going to practice if you don’t have a towline? The “salvage” event rules state that: “A tug, or other vessel suitably fitted, approaches a “derelict”, snags it, and tows it back to port. The derelict may be snagged by a line towed astern of the (rescue) vessel while it circles the derelict. The drag (tow) line will carry a small float at two thirds and at the end of its length. Regatta organizers will supply lines of 10, 15, and 20 feet in length for the contestants to choose from.”

G B Robbins' 47 foot MLB
Coast Guard 47' Motor Lifeboata scratch build
G B Robbins
Wave Blasters of Florida
The 47MLB was developed in the 1990's to be used in extreme bad weather and heavy swells. It was designed to automatically right itself if overturned. The original 47's including the 47201 was one of the prototype models for the Coast Guard. After several upgrades the 47 MLB was mass produced and still in service throughout the US and other countries. The crew is normally made up of six coasties with two in the lower conn and two boarding members. The original 47201 was auctioned off since the upgrades were too costly to justify. Where is she now, I do not know.
